IMD Issues Orange Alert For Assam & Meghalaya As Heavy Rains, Thunderstorms Continue To Drench Northeast India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (May 13) said that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms likely to continue over Assam, Meghalaya and other Northeast states during next five days.

According to IMD, due to strong southwesterly winds from Bay of Bengal to northeast & adjoining east India at lower tropospheric levels:

  •  Widespread light/moderate rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Northeast India & Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during next five days.
  • Isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over Assam & Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during 13-17 May. Isolated extremely heavy falls also likely over Meghalaya on 13-14 May.
  • Isolated heavy falls very likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 17 May and isolated heavy to very heavy falls during 13-16 May.
  • Isolated heavy falls very likely over Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura during 13-17 May.

Accordingly, the IMD has also issued an ‘Orange Alert’ over Assam and Meghalaya for 13-14 May advising its residents to be prepared to take a course of action.
