The Assam Government will soon set up Unity Mall (Ekta Mall) in Guwahati.

Sharing details of the project, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (July 24) tweeted, “Very few leaders since Independence have worked as hard as Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji to promote national integration. The one-of-its-kind Unity Mall will soon be a reality in Assam.”

The Chief Minister also said that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Government of India has encouraged States to setup Unity Malls for sale and promotion of One District One Product (ODOPs), handicrafts, GI products among others alongwith sale of such products of other States. Guwahati, being the capital and the gateway to Southeast Asia, serves as the perfect location for setting up Assam’s Unity Mall.

The building will have two levels of basement, ground floor and five storeys above having multiple facilities.

“The mall will feature 35 shops for each State and Union Territories, 35 shops for Assam’s districts, shops for Indian commercial brands, food court, yoga and meditation area, art gallery, dormitories, among others,” CM Sarma informed.

Moreover, the mall will help local producers and artisans, create employment oportunities, promote Made in Assam and Made in India products, etc.

It should be mentioned that the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the union budget this year, said that the Centre would encourage state governments to start Unity Malls in the capitals of the states or in other major cities. The ODOP is an initiative by the Union Government to promote district-wise special products.
