Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday (May 8) attended a public meeting at Lalit Chandra Bharali (LCB) College premises in Maligaon, Guwahati to mark the Golden Jubilee celebration of the historic educational institution.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister lauded the family members of late Lalit Chandra Bharali for their magnanimity, which led to the educational institution having land of its own.

“Established on August 9 of 1971 with efforts from local civilian population and employees of the Northeast Frontlier Railway Headquarter, this premier institution of the region has been extending yeoman service to the field of education and intellectual enrichment,” CM Sarma said.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the importance of value-based education in current scenario, when there seem to be rat race among students for higher scores, owing to peer pressure and parental expectation.

“An educational system that doesn’t take into account the importance of valuebased learning cannot bring about much-desired social changes and reforms,” CM Sarma added.

Referring to education as a composite process in contrast to a watertight compartment, the Chief Minister said that the new National Education Policy has been carefully formulated to ensure a wholesome education is imparted to the coming generation.

CM Sarma also stated in the competitive world of today, it is imperative that one has adequate knowledge on not only his or her mother tongue but also working knowledge of languages such as Hindi and English.

The Chief Minister said that learning new languages should always be seen as an art of acquiring a new skill which will enable one to be always a step ahead of someone without the knowledge of that particular language.

LCB Principal Dr. Amarendra Kalita, legislator Taranga Gogoi, among others were also present in the event.
