Haryana Govt Announces Rs 6 Crore For Tokyo Olympics Gold Medallist Neeraj Chopra

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday (August 7) announced a cash reward of Rs 6 crore and a government job for Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra.

Chopra made history on Saturday by winning independent India’s first individual Olympic gold medal in athletics.

The athlete from Haryana’s Panipat district clinched the gold medal in javelin throw with an attempt of 87.58 metres.

He also becomes only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics.

Neeraj Chopra threw the javelin 87.03 m in his first throw and bettered it with 87.58 m.

Neeraj managed four legitimate throws of 87.03 m, 87.58 m, 76.79 m and 84.24 m while his fourth and fifth throws were disqualified.

The second throw of 87.58 m was enough for Neeraj to secure the gold medal for India.

With this outstanding performance, Neeraj also took India’s medal haul to seven in the Tokyo Olympics – the country’s highest ever, beating the tally of six medals won at the London Games in 2012.
