Former Indian Cricketer Yashpal Sharma Passes Away

Former India batsman and member of the 1983 Cricket World Cup-winning side Yashpal Sharma passed away on Tuesday (July 13) at the age of 66.

The former cricketer reportedly died of cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning.

He is survived by his wife Renu Sharma, two daughters Puja, Preeti, and son Chirag Sharma.

Yashpal represented India in 37 Tests and 42 ODIs for India between 1978 and 1985.

A middle-order batsman, Yashpal made his debut for Team India in 1978 in an ODI against Pakistan in Sialkot. Next year he made his Test debut at Lord’s against England and played in three of the four Tests in the series.

Yashpal scored 1606 runs with two centuries (top score of 140) and nine fifties to his name at an average of over 33.

Notably, Yashpal Sharma was India’s top-scorer in the World Cup 1983 semi-final against hosts England where he scored 61 runs and was involved in a match-winning 92-run stand with Mohinder Amarnath for the third wicket.

His last Test for India was against the mighty West Indians soon after the famous 1983 World Cup triumph.
