Noted Environmentalist & Chipko Movement Leader Sunderlal Bahuguna Dies Of COVID-19

Eminent environmentalist and Chipko Movement leader Sunderlal Bahuguna passed away on Friday (May 21) afternoon due to COVID-19.

He was 94 years old.

He was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at Rishikesh’s All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS).

As per reports, his condition turned critical last night and his death was declared at 12.05 pm at the hospital.

A recipient of India’s second-highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, Bahuguna was hospitalised on May 8 and was on ventilator support.

Bahuguna was one of the best-known activists in India and pioneered the Chipko movement in the 1970s.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to Twitter to condole the death of Sunderlal Bahuguna stating that it has been a monumental loss for the nation.

“Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti,” PM Modi tweeted.
