Six Assam Police personnel died while ‘defending the constitutional boundary’ of the state, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday (July 26).

“I am deeply pained to inform that six brave jawans of @assampolice have sacrificed their lives while defending constitutional boundary of our state at the Assam-Mizoram border. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” CM Sarma tweeted.

The statement comes after clashes erupted between security officials and locals from the neighbouring state.

As per reports, several jawans from both Assam and Mizoram were also injured in the clash that took place at Lailapur area in Assam’s Cachar district on Monday.

However, Mizoram Government said the violence started after the Assam Police crossed the border and “over-ran” a police post at Kolasib in violation of the understanding between the police of the two states. Mizoram also said the Assam Police damaged vehicles on the national highway and opened fire on the state police.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram earlier today and asked them to find a solution and resolve the border issue peacefully.

During the day, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga tweeted seeking Amit Shah’s intervention. He also shared a clip showing police trying to stop a clash among men armed with sticks.

In reply, CM Sarma said, “Honble Zoramthanga ji could you please investigate why are civilians from Mizoram holding sticks and trying to incite violence ? We urge civilians to not take up law and order on their own hands and permit peaceful dialogue to take place between governments @AmitShah @PMOIndia.”

CM Sarma also said that a superintendent of police from the neighbouring state had asked Assam’s officials to withdraw from their post.

“Honble ⁦@ZoramthangaCM⁩ ji, Kolasib (Mizoram) SP is asking us to withdraw from our post until then their civilians won’t listen nor stop violence. How can we run government in such circumstances? Hope you will intervene at earliest ⁦@AmitShah⁩ ⁦@PMOIndia,” CM Sarma tweeted.

Following CM Sarma’s tweet, Zoramthanga in another tweet said, “Dear Himantaji, after cordial meeting of CMs by Hon’ble Shri @amitshah ji, surpriingly 2 companies of Assam Police with civilians lathicharged and tear gassed civilians at Vairengte Auto Rickshaw stand inside Mizoram today. They even overrun CRPF personnel/Mizoram Police.”

CM Sarma also said that he spoke to Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and he reiterated that Assam will maintain status quo and peace between the borders.

“I have just spoken to Hon’ble Chief Minister @ZoramthangaCM ji. I have reiterated that Assam will maintain status quo and peace between the borders of our state. I have expressed my willingness to visit Aizawl and disscuss these issues if need be @AmitShah @PMOIndia,” CM Sarma said in another tweet.

In reply, Zoramthanga said, “Hon’ble @himantabiswa ji, as discussed I kindly urge that Assam Police be instructed to withdraw from Vairengte for the safety of civilians.”

Meanwhile, Assam Police tweeted, “We are deeply saddened & shocked by the death of six bravehearts of Assam Police, who laid down their lives while defending our beloved State’s constitutional boundaries at the Assam-Mizoram Border.”

“We stand in solidarity with the friends & families of our brave Jawans,” it added.
