Facebook-owned social media applications WhatsApp and Instagram saw an outage in India and across the world late on Friday for over half-an-hour.

Many users took to Twitter to complain about not being able to send or receive messages on WhatsApp, while many said they were unable to upload images and videos on Instagram.

Some users even complained about having trouble using Facebook too, but several said their app was working fine.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have trouble accessing some Facebook services. We resolved this issue for everyone, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Facebook spokesperson said in a statement on Friday.

The outage tracking website downdetector.com reported that the applications were not working globally for over 30 minutes.

According to Down Detector, users started reporting problems since 10:45 PM IST. Most users (98%) reported issues of connection, sending or receiving messages and 2% users reported log-in problems.

Downdetector showed there were more than 1.2 million incidents of people reporting issues with Instagram, while over 23,000 users posted about issues with WhatsApp on the website.

Downdetector tracks outages by collating status reports from a series of sources, including user-submitted errors on its platform.

Services were restored at around 11:42 IST.
