Assam Government is soon going to start Guwahati metro rail project Metrolite to ease the growing traffic congestion in city.

On October 30th, 2019 Guwahati Development Minister Siddarth Bhattacharya held a meeting with representatives of the survey agency RITES (Rail Technical and Economic Service).

“Today, we have discussed the technology and logistics regarding the project. We have also spoken at length about the routes. Based on the discussion, we will submit them a report. They will then give us a report on the estimated cost and completion period of the project. The government will take up the funding issue with the JICA, World Bank and will eventually proceed toward executing the project,” the Minister said while speaking to Time8.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had laid down the foundation stone of the project on February 29th 2016.

The project was supposed to be implemented in different places across the Guwahati city and was proposed to be implemented by the Special Purpose Vehicle – Guwahati Metro Railway Corporation Limited.

Speaking to Time8 the Minister said, “Metrolite is a new concept. It will have three coaches. It is cheaper, smaller and slower urban rail transit system compared to metro rail and is fit for a small city like Guwahati. We will first start the project in three mostly commuted routes like Adabari-Khanapara, MG Road.

The RITES is an engineering consultancy company, specializing in the field of transport infrastructure. It has executed projects in over 62 countries on every major continent.
